  • Applications

2-Methylpentan-3-ol (CAS 565-67-3) is a branched secondary alcohol used primarily as a solvent and carrier in organic synthesis and fine-chemical manufacture, as an intermediate to produce esters, ethers and alkyl carbonates for specialty solvents and fragrance ingredients, and as a precursor that can be dehydrated to olefins or oxidized to the corresponding ketone as building blocks for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and surfactants; it is also employed in coatings, inks and adhesives due to its moderate volatility and resin solvency, in liquid–liquid extraction, and in research on secondary-alcohol reactivity and stereochemistry owing to its chiral center.
