  • Applications

2-Methylpentan-2-ol (tert-amyl alcohol, CAS 590-36-3) is used widely as a polar protic solvent for resins, coatings, inks, and adhesives; a coalescing aid for waterborne latex systems; a synthetic intermediate to produce tert-amyl esters (e.g., acetate, butyrate) and ethers such as TAME for gasoline oxygenation and octane improvement, as well as tert-amyl halides and other derivatives for pharmaceutical and agrochemical manufacture; a flotation frother in mineral processing of sulfide ores and coal to enhance selectivity and froth stability; a laboratory and process solvent/reagent for extraction, solvent exchange, and azeotrope breaking, sometimes serving as a phase modifier in solvent-extraction formulations; a precursor to tert-amyl peroxides or hydroperoxides used as polymerization initiators; a blending component in certain specialty fuels; and, historically, a sedative/hypnotic now obsolete, while also contributing indirectly to flavors and fragrances via fruity tert-amyl ester derivatives.
