  • Applications

2‑Methylpentaldehyde (aka 2‑methylpentanal, CAS 123‑15‑9) is a branched aliphatic aldehyde used mainly as a synthetic intermediate: it can be reduced to the corresponding primary alcohol (2‑methylpentanol) or oxidized to the carboxylic acid, forms oximes/hydrazones/Schiff bases for carbonyl protection or tuning, and participates in aldol, acetalization, and Strecker reactions to build longer carbon frameworks; through these transformations it finds use in flavor and fragrance manufacture (imparting fatty, fruity, green aldehydic notes), pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis (as a C6‑branched building block), resin modification and plasticizer chemistry, preparation of surfactants and specialty solvents after conversion, and as a calibrant/internal standard and derivatization agent in analytical methods targeting amines or hydrazides.
