Applications
2-Methyl-1-butanol (also known as isoamyl alcohol) has a mild fruity odor and acts as a versatile organic solvent in paints, printing inks, adhesives and cleaners thanks to its strong solvency and moderate evaporation rate; in the flavor and fragrance industry it is the main precursor of isoamyl acetate that imparts banana and pear notes and is incorporated into perfumes, creams and toiletries; in pharmaceutical, veterinary and agrochemical manufacture it serves as an intermediate for carboxylate and sulfonate derivatives; additionally, 2-Methyl-1-butanol is being explored as a biofuel additive, a cold-flow improver for diesel, an extraction solvent in chromatographic analysis and a pretreatment agent for lignocellulosic biomass.
