Applications
2-Methoxybenzyl alcohol (o-anisyl alcohol, CAS 612-16-8) is used mainly as a versatile aromatic intermediate: it can be converted to 2‑methoxybenzyl halides for nucleophilic benzylations, to 2‑methoxybenzyl ethers/esters applied in fragrance creation and odor modulation (e.g., 2‑methoxybenzyl acetate/benzoate for sweet, warm anisic notes), and selectively oxidized to 2‑methoxybenzaldehyde or 2‑methoxybenzoic acid as precursors for fragrances, cosmetic additives, and pharmaceutical scaffolds; the o‑anisylmethyl motif is also leveraged as a building block in medicinal and agrochemical discovery, and the alcohol itself is a common model substrate in catalysis/green-chemistry studies (aromatic alcohol oxidation, C–O hydrogenolysis, selective transformations) owing to its thermal stability, facile functional-group interconversions, and broad reaction compatibility.
