Applications
2-Cyclohexylcyclohexanone (CAS 90-42-6) is a bulky cycloaliphatic ketone used mainly as a versatile intermediate in organic synthesis: it forms enolates for α-functionalization (alkylation, halogenation), undergoes aldol reactions to build cyclic enones, participates in reductive amination to give cycloaliphatic amines, accepts organometallic addition (e.g., Grignard) to furnish tertiary alcohols, and can be converted by Baeyer–Villiger oxidation to lactones; owing to its non-aromatic, UV-stable cycloaliphatic scaffold, derivatives are employed as building blocks for pharmaceutical and agrochemical candidates, as precursors to odorants with woody–musk character, and as pre-monomers/additives for materials (after transformation to alcohols, urethanes or acrylates) used in weatherable coatings, inks and resins; in research it also serves as a model substrate to benchmark enamine/enolate-based asymmetric catalysis, hydrogenation or transfer-hydrogenation of hindered ketones, and selective C–H functionalization strategies on cyclohexyl frameworks.
