Applications
Isoborneol (CAS 124-76-5) is a bicyclic monoterpenoid alcohol with a camphoraceous, woody–minty odor, used widely as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps, detergents, candles, air care and personal care products; as a low-level flavor with camphor/minty–herbal notes in foods, beverages and confectionery; as a key intermediate for oxidation to camphor, esterification to isobornyl acetate (a major perfumery material), and as a chiral building block in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, flavors and fine chemicals; in teaching laboratories as the classic substrate for the camphor/isoborneol redox pair and for stereochemical spectroscopy exercises; additionally as an odor-masking/odor-modulating co-ingredient in coatings, inks and consumer materials, and it is occasionally explored as a skin permeation aid in topical formulations.
