  • Applications

13-Epimanool (CAS 1438-62-6) is a labdane-type diterpene alcohol found in resins and essential oils of several conifers, and is therefore used as a reference standard for GC–MS/LC–MS terpene profiling in quality control and authentication of essential oils, resins, and botanicals; in phytochemistry and chemotaxonomy it serves as a useful biomarker to trace conifer inputs in environmental, archaeological, and ecological samples; in fragrance technology, 13-epimanool can contribute subtle woody–resinous nuances at trace levels and, more importantly, acts as a semisynthetic precursor and stereodefined scaffold for building labdane frameworks and generating amber/woody fixatives via oxidation, cyclization, and isomerization; in synthetic and medicinal chemistry it is employed as a chiral building block to access libraries of labdane derivatives for bioactivity screening (e.g., antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant) and structure–activity studies; it is also used in studies of terpene stability/oxidation and in the development of sensitive qualitative and quantitative analytical methods.
