  • Applications

1,1-Dimethoxyethane (DME) is a volatile, aprotic ether solvent with high polarity and low viscosity that finds extensive use in both laboratory and industrial settings: it serves as an excellent reaction medium for Grignard, lithiation, and anionic/cationic polymerization processes, and as a diluent or co-solvent in lithium-ion and lithium-metal battery electrolytes where it boosts ionic conductivity and thermal stability; in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis DME can replace THF or diethyl ether to enhance metal-salt solubility and shorten reaction times; in natural-product extraction it delivers high yields of essential oils, flavors, and pigments while being easy to recover by distillation; additionally, it is employed in coatings, inks, and adhesives, and as a semiconductor micro-cleaner because it dissolves epoxy, polyacrylate, polyvinyl, and other stubborn organics, allowing lower VOC formulations thanks to its rapid evaporation, relatively low toxicity, and good recyclability.
