Applications
10-Pentadecenal (CAS 60671-80-9) is a long-chain unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde used broadly in R&D: (1) as a component, reference, and precursor in insect semiochemical research and bio-attractant systems (blend formulation for traps, controlled-release carriers, emission-kinetics studies, and optimization of E/Z isomer ratios); (2) as an analytical standard in GC/GC–MS/LC for identification, calibration, and QC of long-chain aldehydes in biological, environmental, and food matrices; (3) as an organic synthon to build unsaturated C15 derivatives (reduction to 10‑pentadecenol, oxidation to 10‑pentadecenoic acid, formation of oximes/hydrazones/imines, Wittig/Grignard transformations, epoxidation of the C=C followed by downstream functionalization), enabling synthesis of surfactants, lipid mimetics, monomers/polymer end-groups, and surface-functionalized materials (imine coupling to amine-rich substrates); (4) in sensory and flavor–fragrance science as a reference compound or precursor to probe the fatty–green–waxy notes typical of long-chain aldehydes; (5) in controlled-release technologies (microencapsulation, polymer matrices) to evaluate volatility and stability of unsaturated compounds; and as a comparator in studies of electrophilic aldehyde reactions with proteins (Schiff-base adducts) in biological systems; note its susceptibility to oxidation/adsorption and isomerization, with common storage under inert gas, cool and dark, and careful selection of E/Z configuration for the intended application.
