Applications
1-Propanol (n-propanol, propan-1-ol, CAS 71-23-8) is a three-carbon straight-chain alcohol whose medium polarity, moderate evaporation rate and low toxicity make it a versatile solvent for coatings, flexographic and ink-jet inks, adhesives and micro-electronic pastes, where it dissolves cellulose derivatives, alkyd, nitrocellulose and acrylic resins while producing uniform dry films; in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations it is incorporated into antiseptics, hand sanitizers, perfumes and creams and serves as a mild fragrance carrier; in organic synthesis it is a building block for numerous propyl esters such as propyl acetate and propyl propionate used as solvents, flavors and food additives, and a precursor to propylamine, propionaldehyde, surfactants, plasticizers and agrochemicals; mixtures with 1-propanol are widely employed for precision cleaning of electronic components and printed circuit boards because they remove grease and evaporate rapidly; in energy applications it is blended with gasoline or biofuels to raise octane and cut emissions, and acts as an antifreeze and de-icing additive in aviation fuel systems; additionally, 1-propanol is used in analytical chemistry, essential-oil extraction, herbal purification, DNA/RNA precipitation in molecular biology and as a phase-transfer agent in nanomaterial synthesis.
