Applications
1-Octenyl succinic anhydride (CAS 7757-96-2) is commonly used as a functionalizing reagent to introduce hydrophobic octenyl succinate groups onto starch and other polysaccharides, yielding OSA-modified starch that is widely employed as an emulsifier and stabilizer in food processing and in cosmetics/personal care formulations. It also serves as a reactive intermediate for grafting onto polymers, cellulose and other natural polymers to create compatibilizers that improve dispersion, adhesion and interfacial compatibility in polymer blends, coatings and inks. In addition, the anhydride functionality makes it a versatile intermediate in the synthesis of specialty surfactants and in adhesive/coating formulations where crosslinking with amines or polyols can enhance film formation and water resistance. It may also be used for surface modification of fillers or fibers in composites to improve compatibility with the matrix, subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
