Applications
1-Nonene (CAS 124-11-8) is a linear C9 alpha-olefin widely used as a versatile intermediate: (1) feedstock for alkylation to linear nonylbenzene/alkylbenzenes for detergent-range surfactants (LAS) and solvents; (2) hydroformylation to C10 aldehydes followed by hydrogenation/esterification to C10 alcohols and esters used in plasticizers, acrylic/maleate esters, coatings additives and lubricant esters; (3) epoxidation to 1,2-epoxynonane for nonionic surfactants, polyethers, stabilizers and plasticizers; (4) oligomerization/hydrogenation to specialty polyalphaolefins or low-temperature oligomers for lubricant base stocks; (5) hydrosilylation, amination or alkylation to give siloxane side chains and amine/quaternary ammonium derivatives for corrosion inhibitors, drilling-fluid additives, adhesives and surface-treatment agents; (6) comonomer/building block in specialty polyolefins/elastomers to tune flexibility, tack and surface energy; note that certain derivatives such as nonylphenol face regulatory restrictions in many regions.
