Applications
1-Methoxy-4-methylbenzene (CAS 104-93-8) is used both as a high-boiling aromatic solvent and as a versatile intermediate: a fragrance/flavor ingredient imparting sweet anisic, warm notes; a building block for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, antioxidants, UV absorbers, and dyes/pigments via electrophilic substitution, halogenation/nitration, side-chain oxidation to p-methoxybenzaldehyde (anisaldehyde), or demethylation to p-cresol; a process solvent for moisture-sensitive organic reactions; a probe substrate in catalysis research (O–CH3 bond cleavage and benzylic oxidations) and kinetics; and a diluent/viscosity modifier in specialty coatings, inks, and polymer formulations where moderate volatility and hydrophobicity are desired.
