Applications
1-Butene (CAS 106-98-9) is primarily used as a reactive olefin monomer and feedstock for polyolefin production. It acts as a comonomer with ethylene to produce copolymers such as linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), enabling packaging films with controlled density and flexibility. It also participates in alkylation processes to yield high-octane gasoline components (alkylates) when combined with isobutane under acid catalysis. As an intermediate in hydroformylation and related transformations, it can be converted to valeraldehyde and downstream derivatives (alcohols, acids, esters) for use in plasticizers, surfactants, and specialty chemicals. It can be oligomerized or polymerized to give polybutenes, which find use as base fluids and viscosity modifiers in lubricants and as tackifying resins in adhesives. In coatings and inks, it can be used as a reactive diluent or comonomer to tailor resin properties. All applications are subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
