    Axit propionic (CAS 79-09-4) là một axit hữu cơ mạch thẳng ba carbon được sử dụng rộng rãi làm chất bảo quản chống mốc cho bánh mì, pho-mát và các sản phẩm nướng, phụ gia kiểm soát vi sinh cho thức ăn chăn nuôi và hạt ngũ cốc, trung gian tổng hợp dược phẩm, thuốc diệt nấm và diệt khuẩn sau thu hoạch, chất điều chỉnh pH trong đồ uống, dung môi trong sản xuất nhựa cellulose acetate propionate, chất khơi mào cho phản ứng trùng hợp acrylic, thành phần tạo hương vị nhẹ cho thực phẩm, chất cải thiện khả năng chống cháy của dung môi clo hoá, đồng thời còn đóng vai trò chất tẩy rửa, chất ổn định cao su, phụ gia tẩy gỉ kim loại và chất trung gian trong tổng hợp thuốc trừ cỏ, hương liệu và thuốc nhuộm.
