    Heneicosane (CAS 629-94-7) là ankan mạch thẳng C21 không phân cực, ít bay hơi, tan trong dung môi hữu cơ và có nhiệt độ nóng chảy khoảng 39–41 °C, được dùng rộng rãi làm chất chuẩn n-alkan trong sắc ký khí/GC–MS để thiết lập chỉ số lưu giữ (Kováts/linear retention index), làm chuẩn nội/chuẩn ngoại để định lượng hydrocarbon trong mẫu dầu khí, nhiên liệu và polyme; là hợp phần tham chiếu trong nghiên cứu phân hủy sinh học dầu mỏ và mô phỏng vận chuyển hydrocarbon; được sử dụng trong sinh thái hóa học côn trùng như một thành phần hydrocarbon biểu bì/pheromone tổng hợp để khảo sát hành vi và nhận diện loài; làm vật liệu chuyển pha (PCM) vùng ~40 °C cho lưu trữ nhiệt và ổn định nhiệt trong vật liệu xây dựng, dệt kỹ thuật và điện tử công suất; đồng thời là chất mô hình cho động học cháy, nhiệt phân và để điều chỉnh khoảng nóng chảy/độ nhớt trong sáp và mỡ bôi trơn.
