    Axit fomic (HCOOH, CAS 64-18-6) là axit đơn carboxylic mạnh có mặt trong nhiều lĩnh vực: trong thuộc da nó hạ pH nhanh, làm sạch và cố định màu, tạo độ mềm bền cho da; trong nhuộm sợi len, cotton, polyeste nó thay thế axit khoáng độc hại; trong chế biến cao su thiên nhiên, nó được phun vào mủ để kết dính, tiết kiệm chi phí; trong bảo quản thức ăn chăn nuôi và ủ cỏ khô, khả năng kháng khuẩn ức chế vi sinh vật gây hư, giữ nguyên giá trị đạm; hơi axit fomic diệt ve Varroa trong nuôi ong; trong tinh luyện kim loại và mạ điện, nó là chất đánh bóng, tạo phức, đệm pH; trong tổng hợp dược phẩm, thuốc bảo vệ thực vật, hương liệu, nó là nguồn C1 tạo formiat, formamid, anhydride và dẫn xuất khác; dung dịch formiat natri hoặc kali làm chất chống băng cho đường băng, dung dịch khoan mật độ cao; ở lĩnh vực năng lượng, axit fomic được nghiên cứu như tác nhân mang hydro lỏng và nhiên liệu cho pin nhiên liệu trực tiếp; ngoài ra nó còn làm dung môi, chất tẩy rửa, điều chỉnh pH, xúc tác và khử màu trong sản xuất giấy.
