Grapefruit Acetal (Methyl Pamplemousse / Amarocit) is a specialized synthetic fragrance compound (CAS# 67674-46-8) widely used in the fragrance industry. Appearing as a colorless to pale yellow liquid, this product delivers a characteristic fresh, bitter grapefruit peel scent intertwined with aspects of vetiveryl acetate. Unlike natural grapefruit essential oil, which is highly susceptible to oxidative degradation and phototoxicity, Grapefruit Acetal is a fully synthetic molecule engineered to overcome the chemical vulnerabilities of natural ingredients in citrus structures.
Regarding its olfactory profile and blending applications, Grapefruit Acetal stands out with a sharp top note that imparts the bitterness of grapefruit pith, accompanied by faint sulfurous, soapy-green, and woody-violet nuances. In fine fragrance, it is a powerful tool to modernize traditional citrus structures and serves as an excellent booster for vetiver accords. With its strong diffusive properties, this product blends perfectly with components like Dihydromyrcenol, Nootkatone, or Rhubofix, creating an explosion of freshness in men's fragrances, summer perfumes, and fougère structures.
In terms of chemical stability, the outstanding strength of Grapefruit Acetal is its ability to maintain excellent stability in alkaline environments (pH 9-11), where traditional aldehydes or natural essential oils typically degrade and discolor. Thanks to its acetal molecular structure, it is highly ideal for scenting functional consumer products such as bar soaps, laundry powders, and all-purpose cleaners. Additionally, the product exhibits superior oxidative stability, producing almost no peroxides during long-term storage. However, special care must be taken not to use this compound in acidic environments (such as fabric softeners or low-pH cleaners), as it will rapidly hydrolyze, breaking down the molecular structure and altering the scent.
Regarding safety and regulations, Grapefruit Acetal is completely free of furocoumarins, meaning it does not cause the phototoxicity commonly associated with cold-pressed grapefruit oil. It is also unrestricted by IFRA (International Fragrance Association) concentration limits, allowing perfumers to use it in flexible dosages without violating skin safety standards. Nevertheless, there is an extremely important point to note: this product is exclusively intended for fragrances and cosmetics and must absolutely not be used as a food flavor. Some literature sources erroneously confuse it with FEMA 3743, but in reality, Grapefruit Acetal is not approved by the FDA or JECFA for addition to food or beverages.
