Isobutyl Quinoline (and its isomer variations such as Pyralone or Butyl Quinoline Secondary) is a premium and iconic synthetic raw material in the perfumery industry. This compound is renowned for its ability to create extremely powerful leather, dry tobacco, and woody notes. Historically, Isobutyl Quinoline was the core ingredient in the famous Mousse de Saxe base created by the De Laire house, which shaped the golden era of classic leather and Chypre fragrances.
The product delivers a complex scent profile with high diffusion and vibrancy. The characteristic odor of Isobutyl Quinoline is described as a blend of tanned leather, damp earthy roots (similar to vetiver), oakmoss, and tobacco. Depending on the specific isomer, the olfactory nuances can vary slightly; for instance, Pyralone is generally finer, more aromatic, and more tobacco-like, with a less dry and earthy character compared to Butyl Quinoline Secondary. In the dry-down (base notes), this compound leaves a resinous layer and sometimes exhibits animalic or tarry facets.
One of the greatest advantages of Isobutyl Quinoline is its exceptionally high substantivity and its ability to act as an outstanding fixative. Its odor can last on a smelling blotter from 5 days up to over 160 hours. Due to its extreme odor strength, perfumers are often recommended to evaluate and use this product in a diluted form (such as 10% or 1% in DPG solvent) to fully appreciate its scent structure without being overwhelmed.
This chemical is a perfect choice for building depth in Chypre, Fougère, and Oriental perfume formulas, especially in premium masculine fragrances. The typical usage rate in fine fragrances usually ranges from minute traces up to a maximum of about 1% to 2% of the total composition.
Beyond fine fragrances, Isobutyl Quinoline is highly favored in consumer goods and home care products thanks to its excellent chemical stability. Due to its pyridine ring structure, which is highly resistant to hydrolysis and oxidation, this compound retains its scent exceptionally well across various harsh pH environments. The product demonstrates excellent performance in application bases such as acid cleaners, fabric conditioners, shampoos, antiperspirants, and bar soaps. It also provides great scent diffusion when used in candles or spatial diffusers.
