    D-(+)-Xylose is a naturally occurring five-carbon monosaccharide obtained from the hemicellulose of wood and corn cobs; it is widely employed as an intermediate for the manufacture of the sugar substitute xylitol, as a precursor in second-generation bioethanol fermentation and other high-value biochemicals, as a reference agent in the D-xylose absorption test for diagnosing celiac disease and malabsorption syndromes, as a low-energy carbohydrate in diabetic and diet foods, as a substrate in xylanase studies, as a chromatographic standard for aldopentose separation, and as a flavor, bulking or excipient component in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cell-culture media, oligosaccharide synthesis and low-calorie natural flavor production.
