Applications
Boron trifluoride (BF3) is a strong Lewis acid used primarily as a catalyst in organic synthesis and polymerization processes. In industry it is employed as a catalyst for the cationic polymerization of epoxides and vinyl ethers, enabling production of specialty polymers, coatings, and adhesives. It also promotes acetalization reactions (formation of acetals from aldehydes and diols) and Friedel–Crafts alkylations/acylations for the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. In electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, BF3 serves as a boron-containing precursor or catalyst source in deposition and doping steps. Additionally, it functions as an intermediate for the synthesis of boron-containing compounds and other intermediates used in specialized chemical synthesis.
