Applications
Boron trichloride (BCl3) is a highly reactive Lewis acid used as a catalyst and a synthetic building block in chemical manufacturing. It is used to catalyze cationic polymerization of olefins (notably isobylene) to polyisobutylene, which is used in lubricants, tackifiers and sealants. It also enables Friedel–Crafts-type alkylation and acylation of aromatic substrates in the production of specialty chemicals and polymers. In organoboron chemistry, it serves as a starting material for preparing boron-containing reagents and materials, including boron-doped films and other boron-containing polymers used in electronics and optics. It is also used as a boron source in deposition processes (e.g., chemical vapor deposition, CVD, and metal-organic CVD, MOCVD) to fabricate boron-containing semiconductor components or protective coatings. As a reactive intermediate, it is employed in the synthesis of various boron-containing intermediates for research and industrial applications. Usage is subject to local regulations and formulation limits.
