    2-Butanone (Methyl Ethyl Ketone, MEK, CAS 78-93-3) là một dung môi công nghiệp bốc hơi nhanh có khả năng hòa tan vượt trội nên được dùng rộng rãi trong sơn phủ ô-tô và kim loại, sơn gỗ, mực in, vecni, keo dán giày dép và đồ gỗ, nhựa vinyl, cao su chloroprene, cũng như trong quá trình chiết tách dầu thực vật, tách paraffin khỏi dầu bôi trơn, tẩy rửa linh kiện điện tử, làm sạch bề mặt trước khi hàn, gia công sợi tổng hợp, sản xuất phim ảnh và băng từ; ngoài ra nó còn là tiền chất để tổng hợp thuốc, hương liệu, thuốc trừ sâu, chất hoạt động bề mặt, phụ gia xăng, đồng thời được ứng dụng như chất pha loãng trong dung dịch khử nước khí tự nhiên, chất hồi phục trong tái sinh màng trao đổi ion và chất điều chỉnh độ nhớt của mực, với ưu điểm bay hơi nhanh, độ tinh khiết cao, ít cặn, song cần tuân thủ nghiêm ngưỡng phơi nhiễm OSHA/TWA 200 ppm, trang bị thông gió và thiết bị chống cháy nổ vì hơi dễ bắt lửa và ảnh hưởng đến thần kinh trung ương khi hít phải lâu dài.
