    m-Cresol (CAS 108-39-4) là một hợp chất phenolic thơm được ứng dụng rộng rãi trong công nghiệp hóa chất làm nguyên liệu trung gian sản xuất nhựa phenol-formaldehyde, nhựa epoxy và nhựa polycarbonate, là thành phần quan trọng trong quá trình tổng hợp chất chống oxy hóa butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) và vitamin E tổng hợp, được dùng làm dung môi đặc biệt cho mực in, chất tẩy rửa bo mạch, keo dán điện tử, đồng thời thể hiện tính sát khuẩn cao nên có mặt trong chế phẩm thuốc sát trùng, chất bảo quản gỗ, thuốc thú y; trong lĩnh vực nông dược nó tham gia vào việc điều chế thuốc diệt cỏ và thuốc trừ sâu, còn trong ngành nhuộm và hương liệu nó là tiền chất của một số thuốc nhuộm azo, chất tạo mùi khói và chất tạo hương của mỹ phẩm; ngoài ra m-cresol còn được dùng làm chất ức chế trùng hợp, chất ổn định nhiên liệu, phụ gia pha chế dầu nhờn và chất hiệu chỉnh độ nhớt cho mực in phun công nghiệp.
