    (S)-(-)-Limonene, mã CAS 5989-54-8, là một monoterpen mùi cam tự nhiên được sử dụng rộng rãi từ ngành hương liệu tới công nghiệp hóa chất xanh; trong thực phẩm và đồ uống nó đóng vai trò chất tạo hương cam quýt, điều vị cho kẹo, nước giải khát, gia vị lỏng và là thành phần của chất hỗ trợ tiêu hóa nhờ đặc tính chống oxy hóa; trong mỹ phẩm, dầu gội, nước hoa và sản phẩm vệ sinh cá nhân nó mang lại mùi thơm tươi mát đồng thời hoạt động như chất che phủ mùi khó chịu; với tư cách dung môi sinh học dễ bay hơi, limonene thay thế toluen và xylene trong mực in, sơn, chất tẩy rửa công nghiệp và dung dịch tách nhựa in 3D; trong nông nghiệp nó được khai thác như thuốc trừ sâu sinh học, chất xua đuổi côn trùng và chất kháng nấm; trong tổng hợp hữu cơ, cấu hình S tạo ra nguồn khối xây chirality để điều chế dược chất, polymer phân hủy sinh học và vật liệu nano; ngoài ra khả năng hòa tan polystyren giúp tái chế nhựa, còn tính kháng khuẩn và kháng virus thúc đẩy nghiên cứu dược phẩm tự nhiên và chất khử mùi không khí.

Oxidation products of Limonene, especially hydroperoxides, have been demonstrated to be potent sensitizers.
d-, l- and dl-Limonene and natural products containing substantial amounts of it, should only be used when the level of (hydro)peroxides is kept to the lowest practical level, for instance by adding antioxidants at the time of production. The addition of 0.1% BHT or α-Tocopherol for example has shown great efficiency. Such products should have a peroxide value of less than 20 millimoles per liter, determined according to the IFRA analytical method for the determination of the peroxide value, which can be downloaded from the IFRA website (www.ifrafragrance.org).
