    4-Hydroxybutanoic acid lactone (GBL, CAS 96-48-0) là một dung môi phân cực mạnh được dùng rộng rãi trong công nghiệp làm sạch và tẩy rửa điện tử, là tiền chất để tổng hợp N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, pyrrolidone, các polymer PBT và polyuretan, chất khởi đầu trong sản xuất dược phẩm, hương liệu và thuốc trừ sâu, tác nhân nạp điện giải cho pin lithium, chất điều biến độ nhớt cho sơn, mực in, chất tẩy sơn và dung môi tách chiết trong phân tích, đồng thời được quản lý nghiêm ngặt vì có thể chuyển hóa sinh học thành GHB với nguy cơ bị lạm dụng.
