    Asarone (CAS 2883-98-9), một phenylpropenoid tồn tại chủ yếu dưới dạng đồng phân α/β từ loài Acorus, được ứng dụng chủ yếu trong nghiên cứu và kiểm nghiệm: làm chất chuẩn phân tích để định lượng/kiểm soát chất lượng tinh dầu và cao dược liệu bằng GC-MS/HPLC, phát hiện pha trộn gian lận và giám sát tuân thủ giới hạn asarone trong thực phẩm, đồ uống và mỹ phẩm; trong dược lý tiền lâm sàng, asarone được khảo sát về tác dụng hướng thần (chống co giật, an thần, bảo vệ thần kinh, hỗ trợ nhận thức), chống viêm, chống oxy hóa, kháng khuẩn–kháng nấm (kể cả ức chế biofilm), tác dụng diệt côn trùng/ấu trùng và ức chế tăng sinh tế bào ung thư, qua đó dùng như phân tử công cụ để thăm dò tín hiệu thần kinh, stress oxy hóa và viêm; trong nông nghiệp và bảo quản sau thu hoạch, các chế phẩm giàu asarone được đánh giá như thuốc trừ sâu nguồn gốc thực vật, chất xua đuổi và chất bảo quản chống sâu mọt/nấm mốc; đồng thời asarone còn là chất đánh dấu hóa học của tinh dầu calamus trong truy xuất nguồn gốc và khảo cổ hương liệu; lưu ý do lo ngại độc tính (đặc biệt β-asarone có khả năng gây độc gen và gây ung thư), việc dùng asarone trong hương liệu, thực phẩm và mỹ phẩm bị hạn chế nghiêm ngặt ở nhiều nơi, nên ứng dụng hiện nay chủ yếu tập trung vào nghiên cứu, phân tích và giám sát an toàn, không khuyến khích dùng trực tiếp cho người tiêu dùng.

Hạn chế
On the basis of established maximum concentration levels of this substance in commercially available natural sources (like essential oils, extracts and absolutes), exposure to this substance from the use of these oils and extracts (e.g. Calamus oils) is regarded acceptable as long as the level of cis- and transAsarone in the finished consumer product does not exceed 100ppm (0.01 %).
