Applications
Silicon tetrachloride (CAS 10026-04-7) is a key precursor in silicon metal production for the electronics industry (SiCl4 is reduced in the Siemens process to yield high-purity silicon), a feedstock for silica via hydrolysis to form silica gel, fumed silica, and SiO2 coatings, an intermediate for chlorosilanes and silicone polymers (siloxanes) used in coatings, adhesives, and elastomers, and a precursor in chemical vapor deposition to form SiO2 films on surfaces and optical coatings.
