Applications
Potassium dichromate (CAS 7778-50-9) is a strong oxidizer with several industrial applications. In analytical chemistry, it serves as a standard oxidant for redox titrations (notably iron(II) determinations in acidic media) and in water-quality analyses. In metal finishing, it participates in forming chromate conversion coatings on steel, aluminum, and zinc alloys to enhance corrosion resistance. In coatings and primers, chromate-containing formulations may use dichromate to improve adhesion and corrosion protection of metal substrates. It is also employed in cleaning and surface-preparation solutions for metals and in glass and ceramic etching processes. At the process scale, it functions as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and as an intermediate in chemical manufacturing, under appropriate safety controls and regulatory compliance.
