Applications
Methyltrimethoxysilane (CAS 1185-55-3) is widely used as a silane coupling agent and crosslinking precursor in coatings, adhesives, sealants, and silicone resins. Through hydrolysis and condensation, it forms Si–O–Si networks while introducing a methyl group that promotes adhesion to inorganic substrates such as glass, metal, and concrete and improves moisture resistance and durability. It serves as a reactive intermediate in sol–gel processes to produce organically modified silica (ORMOSIL) and hybrid coatings with hydrophobic or weather-resistant surfaces. It can also be employed as a building block for silicone-based polymers used in electronics encapsulation and protective coatings, and as a surface modifier to tailor interfacial properties in composites and adhesives.
