    Safrole (CAS 94-59-7) là một phenylpropen tự nhiên có mùi ấm ngọt, hiện được sử dụng hợp pháp chủ yếu như nguyên liệu trung gian trong công nghiệp hương liệu và nông hóa: làm feedstock để sản xuất các thành phần mùi như heliotropin (piperonal) và một số dẫn xuất methylenedioxy, là mắt xích trong chuỗi cung ứng tạo ra các chất hiệp đồng thuốc trừ côn trùng như piperonyl butoxide (PBO), đồng thời đôi khi được dùng với hàm lượng rất thấp trong một số công thức nước hoa đặc thù; trong nghiên cứu và kiểm nghiệm, safrole đóng vai trò chất chuẩn/đối chiếu cho phân tích sắc ký, mô hình để nghiên cứu chuyển hóa, độc tính gan và cơ chế ức chế enzym cytochrome P450 của khung methylenedioxy, cũng như chất tham chiếu giảng dạy về hóa học allylbenzene; do độc tính và khả năng gây ung thư đã được ghi nhận ở động vật, safrole bị cấm dùng làm chất tạo hương thực phẩm tại nhiều nước và chịu kiểm soát/giấy phép nghiêm ngặt về mua bán, vận chuyển và tồn trữ vì nguy cơ bị lạm dụng như tiền chất trong sản xuất chất ma túy tổng hợp, nên các ứng dụng đều ở quy mô công nghiệp hoặc phòng thí nghiệm có kiểm soát kèm yêu cầu an toàn nghiêm ngặt (tủ hút, bảo hộ, quản lý chất thải).

Hạn chế
On the basis of established maximum concentration levels of this substance in commercially available natural sources (like essential oils, extracts and absolutes), exposure to this substance from the use of these oils and extracts is regarded acceptable as long as the total concentration of Safrole, Isosafrole and Dihydrosafrole in the finished consumer product does not exceed 0.01%.
