    Axit piperonylic (CAS 94-53-1, 3,4-methylenedioxycinnamic acid) là một nguyên liệu trung gian đa dụng trong tổng hợp hữu cơ và nghiên cứu: được dùng làm khối xây dựng để tạo dẫn xuất methylenedioxyphenyl trong dược chất, thuốc bảo vệ thực vật, hương liệu và mùi hương (thông qua este hóa/amit hóa, hoạt hóa thành acid chloride, khử hoặc khử carboxyl, và các quy trình ghép nối), làm chuẩn phân tích cho HPLC/GC khi định lượng hợp chất họ methylenedioxy trong dược liệu và thực phẩm, và đặc biệt là tác nhân công cụ trong sinh học thực vật nhờ ức chế theo cơ chế dựa trên P450 đối với enzyme cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), qua đó điều chỉnh dòng chuyển hóa phenylpropanoid/monolignol để nghiên cứu sinh tổng hợp lignin, tái cấu trúc thành tế bào, đáp ứng phòng vệ và tăng khả năng thủy phân sinh khối; ngoài ra, nhóm acid carboxylic giúp nó hữu ích cho gắn nhãn, thiết kế tiền dược/chất liên hợp, hoặc làm tiền monomer chức năng trong vật liệu.
