    Methyl linolenate (CAS 301-00-8) là este methyl của axit α-linolenic có ba liên kết đôi, được dùng rộng rãi làm chất chuẩn phân tích FAME trong GC/GC-MS để định lượng hồ sơ axit béo của dầu mỡ thực vật và kiểm soát chất lượng, đồng thời là cơ chất mô hình để nghiên cứu tự oxy hóa, peroxid hóa lipid, độ bền oxy hóa và cơ chế ức chế bằng chất chống oxy hóa; trong xúc tác và enzyme, nó dùng để khảo sát tính chọn lọc của lipase, trao đổi este, thủy phân và làm tiền chất thu hồi ALA; ở lĩnh vực vật liệu và năng lượng, nó là feedstock sinh học cho nghiên cứu biodiesel (đánh giá tác động đến chỉ số cetane, dòng chảy lạnh, NOx) và có thể epoxid hóa/oligome hóa để tạo chất hóa dẻo sinh học, chất ổn định PVC, dung môi xanh, chất pha loãng phản ứng và nhựa phủ UV/alkyd; ngoài ra còn là điểm khởi đầu cho cắt mạch liên kết đôi (ozonolysis, metathesis) tạo monome và diacid đặc biệt, cũng như trung gian tổng hợp chất hoạt động bề mặt và phụ gia bôi trơn phân hủy sinh học; do rất dễ oxy hóa, cần bảo quản kín dưới khí trơ, tránh ánh sáng và nhiệt, thường bổ sung chất chống oxy hóa; nguồn gốc thường từ dầu hạt lanh, đậu nành hoặc dầu tảo.
