    (-)-Germacrene A (CAS 28387-44-2) là một sesquiterpen tự nhiên được ứng dụng chủ yếu trong nghiên cứu và R&D: dùng làm chất chuẩn và dấu vân tay GC/GC-MS cho tinh dầu và hồ sơ chuyển hoá thực vật; làm trung gian/sườn phân tử để tổng hợp, bán tổng hợp và biến đổi chọn lọc thành các dẫn xuất sesquiterpen (oxy hoá thành acid/epoxide/alcohol) và mô phỏng các bước sinh tổng hợp dẫn tới sesquiterpen lacton; là điểm nhánh sinh tổng hợp khai thác trong kỹ thuật chuyển hoá và công nghệ sinh học cây trồng nhằm tăng tạo hợp chất phòng vệ và hương thơm, hỗ trợ chọn giống và giải mã chức năng gene; đóng vai trò tín hiệu sinh thái trong thí nghiệm hành vi côn trùng và tương tác cây-sinh vật; làm chuẩn đối quang để phát triển phương pháp sắc ký đối quang và kiểm soát chất lượng; đồng thời được dùng trong R&D hương liệu như chất tham chiếu mùi và thành phần phối hương, cũng như trong nghiên cứu sắp xếp lại nhiệt (ví dụ thành beta-elemene) nhằm tối ưu hoá điều kiện phân tích, bảo quản và xử lý mẫu.
