    2-Oxobutyric acid (acid 2-oxobutyric, α-ketobutyric) là một hợp chất keto-acid bốn carbon đóng vai trò trung gian quan trọng trong sinh hóa và tổng hợp hữu cơ; trong công nghiệp dược phẩm, nó được sử dụng như nguyên liệu khởi đầu để tổng hợp các acid amin không protein như L-2-aminobutyric acid, D-2-aminobutyric acid và các dẫn xuất có hoạt tính sinh học cao, đồng thời là khung carbon thuận tiện để gắn thêm các nhóm chức nhằm tạo ra tiền chất cho thuốc kháng virus, kháng khuẩn và thuốc tim mạch; trong sản xuất hương liệu - mỹ phẩm, acid này được dùng như building block tạo mùi bơ sữa, mạch nha hoặc rượu mạch nhánh; trong phòng thí nghiệm, nó là cơ chất điển hình cho transaminase, dehydrogenase, được dùng để khảo sát con đường chuyển hóa threonine-propionyl-CoA, nghiên cứu stress oxy hóa, nuôi cấy vi sinh và phát triển quy trình lên men tạo methionine; ngoài ra, nhờ khả năng tham gia phản ứng khử carboxyl và transamin, 2-Oxobutyric acid còn được chọn để sàng lọc enzyme, tối ưu hóa xúc tác không đồng nhất và làm chuẩn phân tích trong HPLC.
