    alpha-Guaiene (CAS 3691-12-1) là một sesquiterpen tự nhiên mang hương gỗ, khói, cay ấm, được ứng dụng chủ yếu trong công nghiệp hương liệu–mỹ phẩm để tạo và điều chỉnh nốt mùi patchouli/agarwood cho nước hoa, xịt thơm, xà phòng, sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân và chất tẩy rửa; trong thực phẩm–đồ uống, ở liều vết, nó được dùng làm chất tạo hương gỗ–đất giúp làm sâu nền hương cho kẹo, đồ nướng, trà thảo mộc và đồ uống có cồn; trong nghiên cứu–phân tích, hợp chất này là chỉ dấu hóa học và chất chuẩn GC–MS/HPLC để thẩm định nguồn gốc, độ tinh khiết và tính xác thực của tinh dầu (ví dụ patchouli, trầm hương/agarwood), đồng thời là công cụ khảo sát sinh tổng hợp sesquiterpen (enzyme guaiene synthase) và các chiến lược sản xuất sinh học trong nấm men/vi khuẩn; trong hóa hương liệu, α-guaiene là nguyên liệu cho các biến đổi như oxy hóa, epoxi hóa hoặc hydro hóa nhằm tạo các dẫn xuất bền mùi hơn và mở rộng phổ hương; thêm vào đó, nó được nghiên cứu về hoạt tính sinh học (kháng vi sinh, chống oxy hóa, chống viêm) và tiềm năng làm chất xua–diệt côn trùng có nguồn gốc thực vật, dù các ứng dụng này còn phụ thuộc bằng chứng và quy định an toàn; về mặt kỹ thuật, hợp chất nhạy oxy này thường được bảo quản kín khí, tránh sáng và có chất chống oxy hóa để duy trì ổn định trong công thức, và việc sử dụng phải tuân thủ hướng dẫn IFRA và quy định địa phương.
