    alpha-Elemene (CAS 5951-67-7) là một sesquiterpen hydrocarbon tự nhiên hiện diện trong nhiều tinh dầu (đặc biệt ở họ Gừng như Curcuma/zingiber), được ứng dụng chủ yếu làm thành phần tạo hương tự nhiên với nốt gỗ–thảo mộc hơi cam quýt trong mỹ phẩm, nước hoa và sản phẩm chăm sóc cá nhân; làm chất tạo hương–tạo vị và chất chuẩn phân tích để kiểm soát chất lượng tinh dầu/dược liệu; làm nguyên liệu/đầu mối tổng hợp trong hóa hữu cơ và nghiên cứu bào chế; đồng thời được khảo sát tiền lâm sàng về các hoạt tính sinh học như chống u, chống viêm, kháng khuẩn và xua đuổi côn trùng (chủ yếu trên mô hình in vitro/in vivo, chưa phải chỉ định điều trị), bao gồm các hệ dẫn thuốc như liposome, nanoemulsion và phức chất cyclodextrin nhằm cải thiện độ tan và độ ổn định; ngoài ra còn dùng như chất đánh dấu hóa học trong giám định nguồn gốc thực vật và lập hồ sơ hương của sản phẩm thiên nhiên; việc bảo quản thường yêu cầu kín, mát, tránh ánh sáng và oxy để hạn chế oxy hóa, bay hơi.
